The Hunting Party

I just got home after watching this FANTASTICALLY SCRIPTED and WELL PLOTTED film called The Hunting Party. This 103 minute-long film summarises good investigative journalism and the tensions we face in reality.

Just a brief introduction (no spoilers included)

Richard Gere plays Simon, who's a correspondent for this news network. He is the cool-as-you-like person who doesn't even flinch when bullets are flying all over the place while he's reporting in the front lines. Together with him is his cameraman Duck, played by Terrence Howard. Duck is the newbie who gets bossed around doing dangerous stuff Simon tells him to. The two of them made a great team covering war zones from Bosnia to Iraq, which eventually won them several Emmy awards.

But on one day, Simon had a meltdown while doing a live broadcast on national television. It cost him his job, and pretty much screwed up his life. On the other hand, Duck who filmed his meltdown got a promotion to be the cameraman for this news anchor. So he gets to travel first class and everything good that comes with the job.

It has already been five years since Simon went missing but deep inside Duck, he is missing this adrenaline rush he had when reporting (or rather filming) in the front lines with Simon although apparently he's enjoying life in pretence. (I suppose he's feeling a little guilty for not helping Simon enough, thats why he's feeling disillusioned)

On that thought, Duck jetted off to Bosnia, accompanied by his news anchor and a Harvard graduate who's there to get some first hand experience on journalism (FYI, Harvard graduate is son of VP of news network. So now it makes sense why he's there when he's a rookie? Haha!) The three of them were there to cover something, which i can't recall now (but that's not impt).

It was at Bosnia when Simon appeared and baited a scoop in front of Duck.

So now comes the dilemna.

Do you take the plunge and risk losing everything you have? Or are you happy with the comfort you're in now and say no?

I think I'll stop here. The movie starts to get really interesting and to a certain extent, funny.

Allow me to quote a sentence from the movie...

"This is reality. The rest is television"

HOW TRUE!! They were reporting at a warzone and it just sums up the world we're living in now. I just feel the motive of the film educates the audience. We don't really get quality films like this week in/out.

Just go watch it already! If you're a journalism major student, ALL THE MORE YOU SHOULD!
