To me, it is about engaging Singaporeans. Or rather, re-engaging Singaporeans to be part of nation building, to feel proud as a Singapore citizen.
Reports like this makes me guilty, as I was also once apathetic about politics. Back in 2008/2009, I remember when Alex Au (author of yawningbread) was invited down as a guest lecturer for one of our classes, most of us weren't keen on discussing current affairs/politics. What explains this lack of interest?
I'm concluding, but of course by no means conclusive - that it's because of disengagement. You see, Singapore is being run like a business. Profit-driven. Results driven.
And unlike a listed company company where stakeholders have a voice/say in decisions, Singapore is unfortunately operating like a Private Limited company where the CEO/Chairman dictates the direction while the rest just follows. Over time, we stop to question why decisions are made because the company's been making money.
There might be a minority cluster of employees who are against the company's direction/policies, but does it matter in this kind of business structure? In business, there is nothing wrong if you're continually bringing in profits, regardless of structure. But this is not a business.
THIS IS A COUNTRY. A supposedly democratic country.
The fact that most Opposition candidates (I am rational and too believe not all are equal) along with random commentaries floating in the social media are of worthy arguments, reflects that we as citizens, do care and all we want is the best for Singapore.
I truly hope this level of engagement can continue to flourish beyond the elections, regardless of the result.. because it is the people's voice that defines a democratic society.
